I travel as a solo all the time both for business and pleasure.
Actually France is pretty easy since lots of hotels have single rooms which are less expenisve and designed for just one person. I have always avoided tours and cruises simply because I don't want to pay the supplement.
My suggestion would be to take a trip to a city first. Paris or London work well for this. Just get your feet wet and see how you like it. Some people do find it lonely, but the upside is you get to do what you want when you want to.
