I agree with others that a double-decker bus tour is good for an overview. I'd also suggest getting a good, not too bulky, London guidebook. I like Rick Steves London book. ( or available at most big book stores.) It has great walking tours laid out and wonderful guides to all the big museums that really help you see, understand, and appreciate the main attractions without going into overload. And it has great practical advice on making the most of your time. Also, we love the PopOut map (about 4" x5" flat and automatically re-folds). It has bus and Underground maps and street maps for the main tourist areas with the attractions. You can buy them in London or order from
