October is a great time to visit New England. Oct. 5-10 is the peak foliage period. I Hope you already have reservations at a place to stay! New Yorkers come in hundreds of buses. As long as they don't wave Yankee banners, we don't mind.
In Providence, check out Firewater. You can take gondola rides down a river thourgh the center of town. Logs burn in floating cans and eerie music plays. It's fun. Plus there are great restaurants (eg, Al Forno).
Plymouth Plantation and Sturbridge are great re-creations of New England life at different times. Rent a canoe in Concord and float down the Concord River to the North Bridge, site of the shots that started the Revolution. Disembark, walk to the Manse, and re-live that fight.
