Call the AAA and order their trip books and maps for New England. They're free for members and extremely useful.
If you're not a member and planning a road trip, I would highly advise joining them.
My personal favorite area of Mass. is the Berkshires and there are many lovely B& B's in the area as well as great restaurants. In Stockbridge, there's a Norman Rockwell Museum. Though I don't care much for his artwork personally, he's certainly a part of our American culture and a visit to the small museum is certainly worthwhile.
Be aware that October is the peak tourist season in New England because of the Leaf Peeping. So make sure you have confirmed hotel reservations and don't plan on winging it unless you don't mind sleeping in the car!
