Mary,
We stayed in Zermatt in the fall of 2001 at the Hotel Walliserhof and loved it. The small hotel is over 100 years old, recently remodeled but with old flagstone halls and stairs, beautiful pine woodwork, and tons of antiques. Our room had a very small balcony AND we could lie in bed and see the Matterhorn framed with the lace curtains! We took the cog rail line up to Gornergrat at over 10,000 feet-- very scenic. After going back to town for lunch, we walked to the upper (south) end of town and took a cable car up to Furi, then walked around the mountain to a footbridge over a deep gorge, and on up to the tiny village of Zmutt, then back down around another mountain into Zermatt. (There are walking maps at the Tourist Office.) A great walk and not that hard. Though we did look like pack animals by the end--kept taking off layers and tying them around our waists! It was an absolutely beautiful November day, to our great joy, and to the chagrin of the thousands of Italians who had come for the weekend to ski. Angie-in Kansas |
