In 1986 My husband and I took and Intourist trip to the Soviet Union. We traveled to Russia, Georgia and Armenia. We were scheduled to go to the Black Sea but we were rerouted due to the horrible Chernobyl incident. Only when we returned to France (on our homeward trip) did we learn of the actual event. We were kept in the dark about what was happening for the entire three week Soviet experience. In addition, we were taken to a restaurant for dinner in Georgia and the next day all of us (our small group consisted of 8 people) came down with food poisoning (including the tour guide). A doctor was called to our room because neither of us could even stand up. The medical treatment consisted of an injection of I have no idea and drinking warm water until we vomited. Been there, done that, not going back!
