Don and Linda and ziners,
My been there, done that, not going back place would probably be the Thai island of Phuket. It has gotten so touristy now that it's lost it's quiet beauty. All kinds of bars and shoulder to shoulder umbrellas and people on the beach.
The Thai island I would pick is Koh Samui. It's the way Phuket used to be -- still quiet, countryside with some touristy stuff, but not as much as Phuket. It is such a beautiful island with scenic spots everywhere, including beautiful beaches.

Mod note: Koh Samui is a protetcted island, owned by the sister of the King of Thailand. As a result, builders are restricted on building height - no building can be taller than the tallest palm tree on the island. This is why it remains a special paradise. Beware, however, it's not for everyone. It's protection means that it can be rough and ready. http://www.samuitourism.com/
