|Subject: Value of Ticket if Airline Suspends Operations|
There were several comments recently about insurance to cover the value of an airline ticket if the airline ceases operations (like National did a few years ago). On international tickets and all frequent flier tickets you are pretty much on your own, and insurance might be a good idea. But if you have a paid ticket on a domestic flight on a US carrier you are probably already protected and insurance may be an unnecessary cost. The best source is faa.gov and firstgov.com where you can read complete restrictions and applicability. In brief, there is a law that other US carriers are required to accept revenue passengers from carriers which have suspended operations. There is a $25.00 cost and the requirement only offers standby travel.
