Bordeaux would be a great base place for your trip. As a city, it's wonderful in itself with beautiful streets, lovely museums, churches, restaurants. etc.

>From there you could take great excursions to places like the Caves of Drach and St. Emilion and some of the other wine regions easily accessible for day trips.

You could also stay in a chateau in St. Emilion and base your trip from there.
