Go for it. There really are lots of wonderful places to see in and around Auckland. If you are interested in history, transport and technology, spend a day at MOTAT. It is the Museum of Transport of Technology, and has a vast range of exhibits, including cars, trains, aircraft (ex WW II). Fascinating. And a day trip to Waiheke Island is a must. I have not seen them, but I believe that there are several good vineyards on the Island. And if you want to travel out of the city a little, head for the west-coast beaches - Piha, etc. These are black-sand beaches, and beautiful scenery.
