Type: Hotel Location: ml SW of Opera House, in heart of main tourist area; on busy street amid shops, bars and restaurants. Opposite tourist office; Sydney Harbour Bridge 100 yds. Royal Botanic Gardens 400 yds. Bustling nightlife for locals and tourists alike. Circular Quay train station 250 yds. Exterior: Newer-looking than name suggests. Attractive 6-storey brick block has flags hanging over wrought-iron canopy. Built 1840s; converted 1986. Interior: Spacious and unelaborate. Vast rather plain lobby has high glass ceiling, internal walkways, terracotta-tiled floor and nooks with upholstered leather armchairs on oriental rugs; a few Aboriginal paintings adorn bare walls. Attractive split-level restaurant contains comfortable dining room and eatery with plenty of windows and pleasant modern furnishings. Casual bar (open to public) has wooden floor and chairs and marble-topped tables. Accommodation refurbished 2000; some rooms with balconies and harbour views. Safes in reception. Grounds: None at ground level. Small but pleasant rooftop pool and Jacuzzi with well-maintained decking, wooden tables and chairs and a few plastic sunbeds on paved lounging area. Impressive harbour views. Opinion: Comfortable choice with friendly atmosphere. Location makes up for pleasant but somewhat unrefined public areas.
