Hi Helen and Ziners,
Linda and I just returned from a visit to Madeira. The island is a walker's dream. There is a network of irrigation canals called levadas and trails along these canals that are fabulous for walking. We took the Levada do Norte walk which is about 8km and takes about 2.5 hours. Our guide was excellent and in his narrative along the way he shared insights and perspectives on what we were experiencing. The walks are organized by Nature Meetings. It's a great way to learn about and appreciate the island while getting some exercise in a short period of time. http://www.naturemeetings.com/ We highly recommend this organization.
