What are your favorite islands?
In Canada, I like Manitoulin Island in Ontario. Although you can get to it by road via Sudbury area, the best way is by passenger and car ferry, Chi-Cheemaun from Tobermory. Then you know you are on an island!
Manitoulin Island which is the largest island in a freshwater lake in the world is quiet, with good hiking (Cup and Saucer Trail high up on the escarpment), nice lake views and lighthouses and small towns. It livens up during Wikwemikong Powwow. This August will be their 44th annual event. http://www.wikwemikongheritage.ca/ http://tinyurl.com/taff for links for Manitoulin Island.
In Britain, years ago when we were living in England, we spent a week on the Isle of Wight in the resort town of Ventor. We had just finished university and we took a Britrail budget package holiday. It was a real bargain and included transporation, hotel, breakfast and dinner (brown windsor soup, strange meat with brown gravy, overcooked veg - once we went out and bought a crab roll after the meal!) but the island was wonderful - Carisbrooke Castle, Queen Victoria's favorite house, Osborne, Shanklin Chine, pretty towns and villages (Shanklin and Godshill). It is a little out of the way for the North American visitor but it is worth spending some time there. http://www.islandbreaks.co.uk/
We are heading for Malta in just over 3 weeks - another island! We are looking forward to it. Tell us about an island that you love.
