Subject: Re: Vienna Hotel
Hello Ziners, I must weigh in and say that I disagree about Salzburg and also Vienna. I traveled there in 2000 on my own and had a great time. I admit that several of the tours I took in Salzburg bordered on the schmaltzy, but they were fun: i.e. the Sound of Music Tour and a dinner theater which featured music from that show. I took several tours in Vienna too and enjoyed them and the city, the unblue Danube notwithstanding.

In fact, I am returning to Vienna in mid-April with a friend. We are going specifically to see the Lipizzaner stallions since she is a dedicated horsewoman. Then we head to Italy (my ninth trip there). Of course, we will certainly spend several days in Vienna and visit places like Schonbrunn Palace, the State Opera House (I had a great tour of this), St. Stephan's, the Hofburg. If we had time, I would drag her to Salzburg too, but her choice is Italy.

We have not yet decided where we will stay in Vienna, but I can certainly recommend the hotel I stayed in in 2000, the Hotel Kaiserin Elisabeth. The location is great, just steps from St. Stephan and the Horburg. I notice though that Frommer labels it expensive now. When I went it was moderate.

I can also highly recommend Munich, one of my favorite cities. There is much to see there and also many tours available to outlying places. And while it is, of course, toutisty, the Hofbrau House is great fun even the special tourist show an upper floor. The food in the lower restaurant is also good. Enjoy!

Sincerely, Joan from Rockford
