Hello Fellow Travelers,
Well, our last real trip was to Italy in March and April. We got a good deal from Alitalia including airfare from Washington, DC, to Venice, plus three nights in a three-star hotel in Venice. We then extended the trip on our own by renting a small apartment for ten days in Florence. The apartment was in the Piazza dei Ciompi, within the historic center but a bit away from the tourist crowds, with a supermarket, bakery, post office, drugstore, and numerous cafes and restaurants within a five-minute walk. We took one overnight trip to Siena and shorter day trips to Lucca, Pisa, San Gimignano, and Fiesole before returning to Venice for one more night and then home.
This trip was so enjoyable that we are going back again next March and April (we love Italy and have been numerous times). This time we got an even better deal using Go-Today, with the Washington/Venice airfare plus four nights (instead of last year's three) in the same hotel we used last time, all for about a hundred dollars less than last year's Alitalia cost. Once again we are extending our stay by renting an apartment in Florence for ten days, this time in via della Rosa, not far from Piazza Santa Croce. We will then go to Perugia for a six-day stay in a small apartment there, and finally will return to Venice for two more nights before flying back to DC. We are also planning another overnight stay in Siena during the time we have the Florence apartment, and we will certainly take other side trips, possibly to Orvieto, Assisi, Todi, Montepulciano, etc.
As usual, we are reading every biography, history, and novel we can think of dealing with any of these places. This is always a major part of our preparation for any trip.
Past trips have included Ireland, England, Scotland, Wales, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Denmark, Sweden, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Italy, San Marino, Spain, Portugal, Monaco, and France, as well as Puerto Rico and many sites in Canada. Clearly we are both travel addicts.
