Subject: Re: Australian Car Rental
Hi John,

Welcome back from Australia.

After doing quite a bit of web searching for rental cars in Australia. We feel we got very good rates from Hertz and we're insured up the wazoo. Also the cars all have the navigation system in them. Something that many companies don't offer.

Thanks for the hotel recommendations for Adelaide. Turns out that there a brand new Radisson in the center of town and they're offering intorductory rates of AUD$110 (about US$75), so we booked that. We're only there one night before heading off to Kangaroo Island.

As people here know, I was doing a lot of hotel searching for Melbourne and had narrowed it down to 2 hotels - the Sofitel at AUD$249 for standard room w/ breakfast and The Windsor at AUD$235 standard room, no brkfst. I've stayed at the Sofitel before (it's lovely) but really wanted to try the Windsor. However, I've been reading that if you don't go for a deluxe room, you may be unhappy as many of the standard rooms are small, dark and have ugly bathrooms. So last night, I called AMEX to cancel but also asked if any new promotions have popped up since I booked in August. Well it turns out that they are now offering a terrific deal - I got a deluxe room with breakfast for AUD$220!!! So, I cancelled the Sofitel instead.

Anyone going to Adelaide or Melbourne in the next couple of months should note these offers.

This is one of the reasons I never use a web booking service. I would have had to pay a cancellation fee....if they even allowed cancellations.

BTW, do you have an international drivers license? My husband only has his US one and has never had problems in Oz before, but someone told me that you need an intl drivers license if you're not from there. You know anything about that?

Happy Holidays, Candice NYC
