We are in the process of putting together a trip to the Yucatan,
Mexico in February. We plan to pick up a rental car at the Cancun Airport. Since we will likely be arriving in the late afternoon, we would like to stay somewhere close to the airport the first evening to avoid driving after dark. We are thinking of downtown Cancun. Any suggestions for an inexpensive place with secure parking. Or does anyone have another place they could suggest for our first night.
Our very tentative itinerary after that is: Day 1 drive to Valladolid and spend night. Visit Ek Balam in afternoon Day 2 Early arrival at Chichen Itza Stay in Piste Day 3 Drive to Merida and set up base there for the next few days. Day 4 Visit Progresso Day 5 Visit Celestun Day 6 Drive to Campeche and stay for night Day 7 Visit Uxmal and drive back to Merida for night Day 8 Drive to Tulum Day 9-12 Relax on beach either in Tulum or somewhere along the Mayan coast Day 13 Fly home
All suggestions for either places to stay (budget) or changes to our itinerary would be greatly appreciated. Would it be better on Day 8 to drive back to Cancun and get rid of the rental car and then take a bus to Tulum as we will be mostly relaxing for the last few days? We will also want to visit Coba while we are in that area. Is there a bus from Tulum to Coba or would we have to take a tour if we do not have a car?
