Here are my thoughts on the best way to spend your 1.5 days out of Christchurch.
There are flights every day from Christchurch to Queenstown. The first leaves at 7.20am and arrives back around 6.35pm. The flight is about one hour. You could hire a car in Queenstown and see the sights, take a jet boat ride, or do a bungy jump! Arrowtown, nearby, is quaint and pretty too.
On day two you could hire a car in Christchurch and drive to Kaikoura, two hours north of Christchurch on the main road, and go whale watching, weather permitting. You could then drive inland to Hanmer Springs and take a dip in the hot thermal pools, then drive home through the Waipara vineyards area and call in on one or more wineries on the way. Hanmer is 1.5 hours drive from Christchurch. Waipara is about 30-45 minutes north of Christchurch. You would need to make an early start to fit it all in, but if you don#t mind doing that you would certainly have a great day. Another good day trip is to make a plane trip over the Southern Alps and Mt Cook.
The West Coast is only 3 hours drive from Christchurch but personally I think it the kind of place you need a few days to mosey around, walk in the bush, get your feet wet and take your time. It would be a good place to visit when you have more time.
I hope that helps. Please get in touch again if there is anything else you#d like to know. And if you#d like a GTG while you are in Christchurch David and I would be a starter for that.
