The information about the Italian train system is correct. The only way to get seat reservation is when you are in Italy. Many of the trains don't even have reserved seats. Since you have a pass, all you need to do is get on the train and find a seat you like. They will let you know at the station if a reservation is required. Non-smoking seats are readily available, so I wouldn't worry about that. The cars are clearly marked on the outside of the train for smoking and non-smoking. There are many more non-smoking cars. Unless you are traveling during the tourist season, you should have no problem getting a good seat. Have a good trip.
