This tip has been mentioned before, but I will submit it for the consideration of the newer members.
If you are using you ATM to get cash in a foreign country, find out what you bank charges to convert to the local currency. I found that my bank was charging 5% to do the conversion. This is over and above the standard ATM fee. I found a local credit union that charges nothing to do the conversion. In other words, I now save 5% on everything I purchase overseas using currency from an ATM.
