Fourteen years ago my parents were visiting us in the USA, from Australia. My Dad, then 65, had a heart attack while here and had emergency triple bypass surgery. His total hospital bill was $45,000. They had bought insurance which covered everything,
including upgrading to business class for him and my Mom for their return.
Please think very seriously about insurance for your mil. I imagine that it will be expensive, at 85 years, but not as expensive as medical care, air evacuation etc.
I assume she is a USA citizen. You should also check into what Medicare covers outside the country.
