Dear Ira et al, Someone recently had the brilliant idea of a debit card for travel. You put whatever amount of money into this travel account and go into any bank and ask for a cash advance. Because it is your money, if you need more cash than your ATM limit, you can withdraw whatever amount you need up to the balance on that travel account any time the bank is open.

We did put a large lump sum into this type of account for emergencies and/or big purchases for a recent trip a few weeks ago. We did not need it, but it gave us peace of mind as I have some medical issues and we might have needed it quickly. You can transfer the $$$ when you return home back to whatever acct. you wish.
