In response to Evan regarding where to stay in Venice, I would recommend staying as near to San Marco as possible for a first trip there. It will cost a little more, but it makes the whole trip most memorable. Commuting into Venice each day takes away the charm and romance of why one goes to Venice. Walk out the door of your hotel, and take in the beauty. Linger past midnight and stroll along the canals.
We rented a car at the main garage area from Avis and found it to be about he same price as elsewhere. Buy as much rental insurance in Italy as you can afford.
Be sure to come in from the airport on the public water taxi/bus. You get a breathtaking first introduction to one of the most unique places in the world.
