Pat and Peter asked for the most economical place to buy groceries, vegetable markets, and extraordinary restaurants.
The most economical place to buy groceries in Maui is Costco, near the Kahului airport. You do need a Costco card to shop here and some of the quantities are huge, but the prices are the best on the island. Stop here before you drive to Kihei.
The second best choice for inexpensive groceries is Safeway in Kihei, just off the Piilani Highway. Use you Safeway Club Card for big savings. If you don't have one, ask for one; it's free. The best produce buys on Maui are at the Ooka Market in Wailuku.
There are also very good produce buys at the Maui Swap Meet, Saturday morning 7AM to Noon, on Puunene Road in Kahului, and at the Ohana Farmers Market, Kahului Shopping Center in Kahului, Wednesday Morning 7 - 11AM. The Swap Meet is really a fun place to go - don't miss it.
We really do not eat at extraordinary (expensive) restaurants, but we do recommend Sansei, on South Kihei Road in Kihei, extraordinary marvelous food and everything is half price Sunday and Monday between 5:30 and 6:00PM. Line up outside the restaurant around 5:00 to assure that you will get in for this great value meal.
We also like Vietnamese Restaurant (that's the name), Azeka I Shopping Center, 1280 South Kihei Road, Kihei, HI 97653
Both Maui Taco, Kamaole Beach Center, Kihei, and Alexander's Fish, Chicken & Ribs, 1913 S. Kihei Road, Kihei, are a little like fast food restaurants, but we think the food is great and the price is right. From Maui Taco, take you dinner across the street and watch a magnificent Maui sunset while munching.
Pat and Peter, we know you will have a great Maui vacation.
