Subject: Re: Turin, Milan, Lake Maggiore budget hotels?
Ann, We stayed in Stresa on Lake Maggiore in the fall of 1997 at Hotel Astoria. I did a web search and their rates now start at 66 Euros. Stresa is a beautiful setting and Hotel Astoria faces the lake with views of the hills behind. Our room was large and very comfortable, there is a lovely rooftop garden, and the restaurant /breakfast room faces the lake with a wall of windows all across the front that are opened up in nice weather. Gorgeous! There is a pool and I believe all the rooms have small balconies. We used Stresa as a base and did trips on Lake Maggiore to the Borromean Islands and Villa Taranto (lovely botanical gardens), and did day trips by train to the Cinque Terre and Locarno. The train route north and then over to Locarno is a beautiful ride. Turin and Milan would also be easy day trips via train from Stresa. Just be prepared for very little English spoken by the staff at the Stresa station. We had rail passes and schedules for the trains we wanted to take, so did not need much help from the station staff. Stresa is one of my favorite places--beautiful flowers, lake, mountain, and island views, music all along the waterfront in the evenings--
