With respect to Boston, I guess that I would favor the area from the North Shore to the Northwest. Concord is about 18 miles northwest. The Colonial Inn is a nice place: http://www.concordscolonialinn.com/ and you have several ways to get into Boston from there: the train which stops in Concord about a mile from the Inn, a drive down Route 2 to the Red Line of the subway system at Alewife (parking there is about $4.50 per day) or driving into the city itself (45 minutes to 1.5 hours depending on traffic).

There is a motel within walking distance of Alewife and it is probably inexpensive, but it is not in an area that I would call charming. Meanwhile I will try to think of other places to stay on the outskirts.
