I tried to drive around the Playa Carmen area last November - it was way too crowded for me. Tulum is worth a stop, I also stayed in a cabana on the beach in Tulum about 5 miles from the ruins. It was absolutely beautiful! There are a lot of cabana rentals along the beach - but it never seemed crowded.
I sustained some serious injuries from a fall in Mexico so I didn't attempt the climb at Chichen Itza. But by watching people - it seems the coming down is harder than the going up. They have a rope going up to hang on too. It's not far from the coast - a couple of hours.
I think the big souvenir in the Yucatan Peninsula is the Panama hat.
