|Subject: RE: Thailand and Vietnam|
Congratulations on great destination choices (IMHO)!
>From all I have learned over the last 7 years living in HK - it is cheaper to purchase inter-region tickets IN THE REGION than to purchase in the US. There are two exceptions to this - the Cathay Pacific All-Asia pass is an excellent deal http://www.cathay-usa.com/offers/aap/subdefault.asp - $999 for US to Asia and up to 16 other destinations (but you have to use HK as a hub) or if you are looking at package tours. I have an excellent agent in HK and have used a good one in Bangkok too so...will send you those off-list.
I've offered tips to others re. Thailand and Vietnam before on the list - best to check the archives and then don't hesitate to ask more specific questions afterwards. But - shall give you my personal faves for each country (in my order of preference): Thailand: Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai (around the golden triangle), Kanchanaburi, Ayuthaya, Krabi, Hua Hin Vietnam: Hanoi, Hoi An, Hue (Ho Chi Minh City/Saigon did not impress us but....we had no time to explore the Mekong Delta which...I understand is interesting)
And - since you are coming this far - it's just a short hop, skip and a jump to Cambodia and Angkor Wat (the whole area, not just that one temple) is definitely THE most incredible historical/cultural site I have ever been to. And...sadly....it won't be the same in a few years so.....I highly recommend going now.
Cheers! Judy in HK
