Hi Nancy:

North of SF and somewhat near the Muir Woods is Point Reyes, a place for whale watching. I don't know if this is the season to see them.

An absolute must see is Point Lobos. People think that the crowded, over glamorized, Cinque Terre in Italy is so wonderful, but it doesn't begin to compare with the California coast. It's a pity they havent seen Point Lobos or Big Sur (also a super sight.)

I'm also a big fan of the Monterey Acquarium, don't miss it. It may be the best in the world. You can spend the better part of a day there and are suprised the time passes so quickly. And take a leisurely stroll through old town.

In Carmel and Capistrano take time to see the Spanish missions, both are very interesting.

The Hearst masion outside of San Luis Obispo is mind boggling.
