Subject: Re: Scuba Diving at Great Barrier Reef
Hi Pat,

I believe that Dunk Island, Lizard Island and Green Island are resort islands which will have diving and golf. P&O Resorts has resort hotels on these islands. They have an US 800 number you can call and ask. There are other resorts there too. You need to do a search for those islands on an Australian tourist site. Very easy to find.

That said, here is how my husband and I handle the situation.....he's a diver and I'm not.

We go to Silky Oaks Resort www.SilkyOaks.com.au which is a P&O resort. It's located about 1.5 hours north of Cairns (nearest airport) and about 20 minutes from Port Douglas (nearest town). Silky Oaks has an arrangement with QuickSilver diving. They pick you up and take you out to the reef and you spend the day there. I went once as I wanted to see the Great Barrier Reef and was able to do so via an underwater glass sided submarine that they have. Also, there is snorkling available. He feels that QuickSilver is a more basic dive and not as exciting as the others, but for his first Barrier Reef dive he liked them. Very well organized.

This January, on out 3rd visit to Silky Oaks, my husband used 2 other dive companies: Haba Dives was one. He can't recall the other. He could have met them in Port Douglas or for a small fee they picked him up at Silky Oaks - he chose that option. He was happy with both companies.

Another option would be to stay in one of the resort hotels in Port Douglas. You'd both be 5 minutes from your desired activities and then you could have dinner together at some of the restaurants in Port Douglas (Nautilus, 4Fish and Salsa are my faves). The most famous resort is the Sheraton in Port Douglas. We've had lunch there and walked around it and decided it wasn't our style, but it might be yours. It's very big and "glitzy". If you like swimming pools they have one of the largest I've ever seen. It meanders all around the resort. The Radisson Treetops is another popular resort in the area. We've driven past it, but never stopped in to look, so I can't give you any impressions.

I believe that there are alot of golf courses in the area.

I hope this helps.
