In 1999, my parents cancelled a trip on British Airways within a day of departure because of injury; they got a full refund on their non- refundable ticket. I can't say whether they will come through for you, but I'd say to approach them politely and see what they can do. The rules usually say that you can change dates for the amount that the fare may have changed plus a change fee. Some people say that if you get one agent who isn't helpful, call again and see if that agent is more helpful.
