Hi Ziners,
Great thread.
Having lived all over Western Canada, and travelled
internationally vicariously through friends with the travel
bug, my preference is where we are currently in Nanaimo, BC.
It has all the amenities of a large city because it serves
the whole north end of Vancouver Island, but it still has
the feel of a small town. The weather is moderate (varies
only zero C winter low to average 20C summer high), we don't
have to shovel snow, there are very few days of wind (unlike
the prairies) and fewer days of muggy weather. There are
mountains and trees, lakes and the ocean to explore. We've
been here 3.5 yrs and still finding new things to explore
and learn about in our own backyard. Today we had a
behind-the-scenes tour of the Malaspina University
Aquaculture lab from one of my students.
Where we live (across from a treed park with old growth forests and 2 stocked fishing lakes) reminds of the cottage we had when I was a child. I feel like I live at the cabin and I get to play in the forest with my dogs everyday (and do agility too Doug!). I am always amazed that as much as I enjoy travelling North America, I am always happiest to be home. And now I am even happier because I have the opportunity to teach others about the places that I love so they can share it with others! Donna Nanaimo, BC |
