Hello Shellfish Eaters:
While doing a modified version of the American Great Loop by boat, we stopped at a place in Carrabelle, Florida, home of the world's smallest police station (a phone booth). The locals all recommended Julia Mae's Seafood Restaurant which will send a van to pick you up (a lot of clientel arrive by boat and have no cars). My friend ordered the oyster stew. There had to be 20 to 30 oysters in it and it was simply extraordinary. I skipped the appetizers and ordered a fried oyster plate. It was incredible. I love fried oysters, but I could not finish them. It was not pretentious at all; the good old boys frequented the place. It leads me back to one of my travel tenets: ask the taxi driver where he would take his wife or mistress where to dine. It has given us wonderful results. But if you get to Carrabelle, Florida, go to Julia Mae's. Don't overdress. Jeans might be too upscale.
