You can save money on motels by staying away from large cities and tourist areas. We took a roadtrip in 2002 and economized that way. An inexpensive cooler that you can leave at your son's will enhance your picnic opportunities. Many motel chains provide a light breakfast. Always ask your innkeeper where he likes to take his family when they eat dinner out. We've discovered some gems this way. Hopefully you are members of AAA for maps and guidebooks. We have never made reservations and have always found someplace adequate to stay.
