Subject: Re: Varenna versus Bellagio?
Hi, Debbie and Ziners,

Hotel Belvedere is a 5-minute hike up hill from the ferry dock. Their terrace affords a beautiful lake view. Make sure you ask for a room in the back facing the lake. The front rooms can be very noisy in the night for cars passing by on the road in front of the hotel.

In Varenna, I enjoyed our stay at the elegant Hotel Royal Victoria. We paid about $110 for a room with view in 2000 when US dollar was strong, but I can see the price is quite high now.

Both Varenna and Bellagio are all very enjoyable during the day, but Varenna is very quiet (or deserted) in the evening, while in Bellagio you'll have more choices for restaurants to enjoy an evening.

Yes, from Varenna you may take train to Milan, and then take bus from Milan to Linate airport, but I remember the train leaving Varenna was quite early (in order for me to make my 12 noon flight). Make sure it does not lead you to lose sleep the night before just worrying about missing the only train that can possibly get you to airport in time.

Perhaps you may consider moving town on your last night to stay at the town of Como? Como seems to have more transportation choices to the airport, and the travel distance is shorter.
