This might not answer you question as you intended, but here goes anyway.
You'll find usage of debit and credit cards varies considerably accross Europe. In Austria, it is quite common for restaurant and various retail outlets not to accept credit cards. In Switzerland evrerywhere accepts both but it is common for the locals to pay off their entire credit card bill at the end of the month straight from their bank account, effectivly turning it into a debit card. In the UK, credit cards are used as just that - they are accepted everywhere and people often don't pay the bill in full at the end of the month.
