Dear Sybil and Ziners,
Lisa mentioned the Hotel Burnham in downtown Chicago (basically across the street from the original Marshall Field's). We stayed there last year and loved it. The rooms are small, following the pattern of the small offices that used to be housed in the building, but are beautifully decorated. The floors above the 8th still look like the original building, with half glass doors and the old mail slots. The restaurant, Atwood's, is very good. We haven't had much luck in getting a reasonable rate at the Burnham for our last few trips, though. Using Quikbook and HotelDiscount.com we have been able to get a good rate at the Swisshotel. This modern glass hotel has wonderful views and is located on the Chicago River, east of Michigan Avenue. In June we got a very good rate at The House of Blues - it certainly was lively! We enjoy the Chicago River architecture tours on the Wendella boats, located on the river at Michigan Avenue. Millennium Park is great and the Park Cafe is a delightful option for a snack or a meal. The Art Institute is a must, and nothing beats lunch in the garden on a summer day. Have fun! Winnie Newport, RI |
