Subject: Re: Best Tuscan eating experience
Hi Graziella,

Thanks for the recommendation of Fiorentino in Sansepolcro. We had already made a reservation and I am glad that you can recommend it. I agree with you, Cibreo in Florence is a special treat.

Here are my recommendations for special eating in Tuscany:

Da Caino - Via Canonca 3 - Montemerano in Southern Tuscany 0564 602 835. This was by far the best eating experience. It is worth planning a few days in this area just to eat here. This is a two star Michelin restaurant and worth every accolade.

Poggio Antico - just outside Montalcino - 0577 849 200. I must correct David - this is a 1 star Michelin and their tasting menu is terrific - seasonal & imaginative. They offer a wonderful selection of their own Brunello wines.

La Chuisa - Via della Madonnina 88 - Montefollonico - 0577 699 668 Although quite pretentious, this is also a 1 star Michelin and if you can get past the snobby & obsequious staff, you will thoroughly enjoy the food.

Trattoria La Torre - Via Salicotto 7-9 - 0577 287 548 - just off the Campo in Siena. Great food, inexpensive and includes an experience with the strangest owner/waiter. This is still one of our favourite spots - we have driven 50 KM out of our way just to have his delicious pasta.

Il Latini - Via dei Palchetti 6r - in Florence. Not everybody likes this place but if you are willing to be ushered in like cattle after you have waited outside (no reservations) while the staff languishes until the opening hours and if you are open to spending the evening with complete strangers, this is the place to go. We love this place and my yearly hug from Torello along with the bottle of wine he presents me makes it a very special experience.

Omeros - Via Pian dei Guillari - Florence - 055 220 053 - Hard to find - take a taxi - situated in the back of a grocery store. They specialize in excellent "flattened chicken".

Ristorante Le Vigne - Podere le Vigne - Radda in Chianti - 0577 738640 - Food and atmosphere (especially on the terrace) are excellent. They make great Tuscan bean soup.

Antica Trattoria La Torre - Piazza del Comune 15 - Castellina in Chianti - 0577 740 236 - Simple but well prepared food - Try the pappardelle with Cinghiale (wild boar) sauce.

Villa Miranda - 1 km eat of Radda - 0577 738 020 - This is run by the strangest characters (sisters I think) but the food is simple and they make the best Tiramisu anywhere in Tuscany.

La Grotta - San Biagio - down the hill from Montepulciano - 0578 757 479 - Situated across the road from the beautiful church of San Biagio, this is a perfect place for lunch before or after exploring Montepulciano. The food is creative & well served.

Solferino - Via delle Gravine 50 - outside Lucca. 0583 59118 Family run for generations - great food and excellent wines. A little hard to find.

Albergo Osteria Da Toto - Piazza del Tribunale - Lucignano - 0575 836 763 - Recommended by Don & Linda, we had a terrific lunch - just have what they recommend. Very inexpensive & delicious.

Ristorante La Bussola - Piazza le Facchinetti - Porto Santo Stefano on Monte Argentario - 0564 814 225 - This is a charming fish restaurant in the old port. The fish is purchased from Da Roberto fish market which is just a few doors away. Everything is exquisitely fresh and well prepared in a simple way.

Gambero Rosso - Porto Ercole - Monte Argentario - 832 650 superb restaurant with terrace overlooking the port. We allowed the waiter to suggest everything and the food was wonderful.

And if you have a chance to check out Antica Macelleria Falorni in the Piazza G Matteotti 69/74 in Greve in Chianti, you will find a world class sausage maker with wonderful samples.

Also, don't miss Pienza and pecorino cheese.

Hope this inspires you. These are some of the most memorable eating moments of the many, many that we have had the good fortune to experience. Hope to add several more this September, especially if all you Ziners can come up with neat, obscure and new suggestions for us!!!!.

Have a great time in November, Felice Toronto
