Dear Eric and Alan and fellow 'Ziners
Right on about the rechargeable batteries, but don't overlook the benefit of a camera that uses AA batteries. Rechargeable AA's are now pretty inexpensive (a charger and 4 batteries for less than $25 . . . check the web) and AA's are available anywhere as a backup (albeit a bit expensive at some tourist-y locations).
My Canon A60 (which I love, even with its minor faults) uses 4 AA's, and seems to be able to run for days on a recharge. My last camera required a brand specific battery, which was impossible to find on one of my trips, rendering the camera useless.
In my opinion, rechargeable AA's offer the best of both worlds.
