I always used to use the discount Web ticket sites, but have recently found that dealing directly with the airline can give you the best fairs. What I usually do is check Orbitz and Expedia. (I like them because they include the taxes in the original price they quote.) I look for their best fares and then I check with the individual airlines. I often end up saving a few dollars by going to the airline's website, but occasionally have encountered a particularly helpful person over the phone who has found me an even better deal.

BTW, I've needed to purchase one-way tickets a couple of times recently and have found that they can be quite reasonable (e.g., $214 including tax from San Diego to Albany, NY. for TWO one way tickets.)
