|Subject: Portugal - Sept 2004|
Just a short note on a recent trip through Portugal.
Lisbon is a more interesting place to visit than Fodor's or AAA had prepared me. OTOH, Sintra, Estoril & Obidos were not. Fatima and Evora are worthy of a few hours; the St. Francis church in Evora is quite special. Visiting Fatima in late September pleasantly reveals extraordinary acreage of empty parking lots.
I don't know why anyone would go to the Algarve except for golf, where the courses are surprisingly world class - much more so than a few hundred kilometers to the southeast at the Costa del Sol.
The hotel staff at the Praia d'El Rey Marriott (near Obidos) was outstanding, while the staff at the Hotel Quinto da Lago in Almancil did not appear to be enjoying their work (he said, benignly).
Thanks again for the responses to my earlier inquiries. Josh Monterey
