Yes, I have booked travel on the Trenitalia site; I wrote up an explanation of how to do it at < http://staff.mwsc.edu/~mcgarrel/travel/trenitalia.htm>. This is based on reservations only being available on the Italian language site, but it can now be done on the English site. Note that you can book ticketless travel only if your entire trip is on a Eurostar train. It worked fine for me; on the train you just need to show your confirmation printout, or at least your PNR and C.P. codes. Reserving early on Italian trains means three days early; you might want to make sure that no strikes are scheduled for a date you want to travel and you're ready to commit to go on those trains before you book. It is convenient not to spend much vacation time making these arrangements.
