Subject: Bilbao GTG
Hello everybody, last September I had the pleasure of meeting Howard and Jean from Vancouver in my hometown. Howard had contacted me a couple of months before regarding their September trip, and I am glad to have helped them a little bit, although they already had a well-thought itinerary. We asked a waiter at the Victor Montes to get a picture of the three of us, and here you have the result : As I was going away for the weekend, we opted for having dinner on the Thursday when they arrived from La Rioja. I met them at their hotel, and then we walked into the Old Town. Weather was really lovely, so we could enjoy ourselves. We had a glass of txakoli (a white wine from the Basque Country) at the Victor Montes in the Plaza Nueva ( I would have prefer my favourite, the Cafe Bilbao , also in the Plaza Nueva, but it was full of people ), and then we walked back across the river, passing along the teatro Arriaga ( ), up to the Guetaria . I had booked an early dinner, at 09:00 pm. On a Thursday you wonīt have a lot of problems finding a place to eat, but if you want an special restaurant, I would recommend you to book a couple of days in advance. We shared a salad of marinated tuna and anchovies, and a dish of "puntillas" (or embroideries, the tiniest baby squids in batter). Afterwards, Howard and Jean opted for the entrecote (it comes for galician cows) and I had monkfish with shrimps in a txakoli sauce. We couldnīt have anything else, so we had to opted out from the desserts selection ... We had a lovely evening, talking about everything, and I think that they were having a great time in Spain. They were heading the following weekend to San Sebastian, and Asier had been so kind of sending me an itinerary for a day trip. I hope they were able to follow a little bit of it (although I am afraid that I filled them with too many tourist booklets ...). So, if you are planning to go somewhere, check if there is any Ziner living there, and contact them. If they can, you will have a delightful GTG, and if not, they will probably help you out with tips that will make your trip easier and more interesting ... Kind regards, Covadonga Regil Bilbao - Spain
