Hi Josie -- I don't know how much time you have, but my
husband and I drove from New York to Oceanside (near San
Diego) via San Francisco in August. We took the scenic route
and it was well worth it. We drove down California Route 1
as far as San Luis Obisbo where we picked up the 101. We
spent our first night in Monterey which is about a 2 1/2
hour or so drive from San Francisco. The next day the drive
along to coast through Big Sur was absolutely spectacular --
although I'm not sure I'd want to do it in bad weather, not
only because of road conditions but because there's no point
in doing it unless you can actually see the view. We spent
that night in Ventura, which is a quintessentially
California town which seemed an updated, more upscale
version of the Southern California towns I remember as a
child in the 1940s. The following day we left Ventura about
9 am, taking the 101, the 405 and the 5 and arrived in
Oceanside around noon. While the traffic was heavy to my
upstate NY sensibilities, we never encountered anything that
could be described as a traffic jam. (As a matter of fact,
the only serious traffic jam we encountered on our 4000+
mile journey was in northern Indiana just south of Chicago.)
Hope this helps a bit. Landra from Columbia County, NY
