Actually, the American Embassy that was in Saigon when the American War ended and the helicopters lifted off from the roof is not there. The site is there, and there is a low rise building next to the land where the building was. It is not an embassy, but a consulate. The American Embassy in Vietnam is in Hanoi.
I found all of our trip to Vietnam interesting. The Vietnamese look forward rather than back, although you will find a war museum that is quite depressing from my point of view. Hanoi is truly the more beautiful city, but, as an American of "that generation", I found Saigon more compelling. Although the official name is Ho Chi Minh City, we found that most of the people there still refer to it as Saigon.
