|Subject: Re: Egypt and Jordan|
I spent 11 days in Jordan in February of 2000 & it exceeded my expectations. I loved it!
Yes, it's possible to get a nice overview of Petra on a 1-day excursion from Amman, & if that's all the time you have, do it.
I stayed overnight at the Movenpick Petra (nice, way beyond my normal choices!) so my friend & I could be first into the site in the morning. It was cold & we walked down in thru the siq, or passageway, so that when we turned the last corner, we had a fab view of the Treasury. We wandered the whole site, & altho I know it wasn't the smartest thing I've ever done, I did some solo hiking up in the canyons in the afternoon.
I could tell when the tour buses arrived & departed, but it wasn't that crowded even so.
Of course we dallied & finally took the mule/horseback ride option back out from the bottom of the canyon to the Treasury, walked up the siq, & finally another horseback ride back up to the entrance. We were the last 2 visitors out, just before dark.
I'd do it again in a heartbeat, even pushing to stay a little longer if I could. The last 3 windy hours of the afternoon were drenched in solitude & sighing with ancient secrets.
