Staying near the train station would, in my opinion, be the least desirable option for a person who wishes to minimize use of the water taxis. Better to stay near St. Mark's Square, take the water taxi on arrival and departure only, walking as much or as little as feels comfortable throughout the Venice visit.

The water taxi stops are just across from the hotel and the train station, couldn't be more convenient.
