Patti,
I also recommend Paris as a place to enjoy with your kids.
(but then I love paris and recommend to anyone for anything!
I'm just jumping in with an especially family/child friendly
restaurant. La Gare (metro stop: La Muette) in the 16th.
It's an old train station that's now a casual restaurant
that attracts locals with family's. I go there often with my
Parisian friends (who have 2 kids. The food is good, prices
are reasonable and the service is friendly. They even have a
lovely outdoor garden for outdoor dining in the warm
weather.
I especially recommend two things: Their pureed potoato's
are incredible (they bring a whole potful for all to share)
and in the summer months, their watermelon and feta cheese
salad is something I dream about. (never thought I'd like
this combo but had to try it when I saw it on the menu).
You might consider staying at a hotel near a part like the
Luxembourg Gardens so that the kids can have some "run
around" time daily included into the schedule. When my best
friends came to NYC with their two little daughters, they
stayed a block away from Central Park and they took them to
the park everyday for some playtime either before or after
some musuem going, shopping, sight-seeing. This worked out
really well for them and they swear by this method and found
that they didn't have to contend with cranky or bored kids.
Have a great time with your kids in Europe!
