I agree about Rick Steves' books. I've found them invaluable, too. I recently bought a new one of his, called "Mona Winks - Self-Guided Tours of Europe's Top Museums." I haven't read it yet, but it says on the back cover: ".... makes art meaningful and fun by introducing you to the most important treasures of Europe's top 25 museums and historic sites. ...... helps you efficiently visit - and understand - the masterpieces of each museum in just a couple of hours."

So if you're limited on time in the museums you visit, this is really a valuable resource, I think.
