Subject: Re: England and Wales
Hi Pauline,

I believe it took us 2-3 hours to drive from South Wales to the Manchester area. The roads are excellent, and very well marked but they do tend to drive quite fast.

In Yorkshire my top picks would be: York (for the history) Royal Armouries in Leeds (stunning) Thackeray Medical Museum in Leeds (we loved it) Harrogate (gorgeous spa town, very upmarket) East Coast (Whitby) and the best of all are the Yorkshire Dales, a large area of beautiful scenery - although sometimes bleak and severe - with many villages, castles, ruined abbeys, etc. There are many wonderful hiking opportunities.

You would have to search the net for accommodations and you may have to do a bit of searching because it can be quite expensive. I'm sure there are bargains to be found.

I'm sure you already know this, but the James Herriot books give you a really good idea of the Yorkshire mentality especially the farming community. If you have read them, you will know how hilarious they are. If you love animals, you will enjoy them very much.

Hope this information is useful.
